Ah, the joys of parenthood!
There you are, blissfully dreaming, when suddenly, you’re jolted awake by a little voice asking about the fate of the planet.
Lynsey G posed a great question: What do you say to kiddos with anxiety over concerns about the environment or similar global-scale problems, at 2 in the morning?
Here’s one approach you could test to handle those midnight queries with empathy, brevity, and a gentle nudge back to bed.
First, let’s validate those feelings. Even in your half-asleep state, it’s important to let your child know that it’s okay to be worried. “I can see you’re really concerned about the environment. It’s okay to feel that way. It shows you care a lot.”
At 2 AM, simplicity is key. You want to soothe and comfort without diving into a full-blown discussion. “There are many people working hard to take care of the Earth. Scientists, activists, and even kids like you are making a difference every day.”
Highlight the positive actions being taken to address environmental issues. “Did you know that there are cities planting thousands of trees? And schools using solar power? Every little bit helps! Let's talk about that in more detail tomorrow" [usher back to bed]
On the way to bed you might try to empower your child by suggesting small, manageable actions they can take. This can give them a sense of control and purpose. “We can do our part too! How about we start recycling more or planting a small garden? Every little action counts.”
Help your child resettle - you'll have to choose your own things that you think will work for your own child but some things to try might be Deep breathing exercises, a favourite bedtime story, or a gentle lullaby which can work wonders in our own household (usually i'll make up a melody and words to make my child the centre of the lullaby - it can be as cheesy as you want, just keep the rhythm slow and lully think 'rock a bye baby but slowed to half speed!.
Reassure your child that they are safe and that there are many people working to keep the world safe too. “You’re safe here with me. And there are lots of people out there who are working hard to protect our planet.”
Finally, it’s important to set boundaries and encourage your child to go back to sleep. “I know it’s a big topic, but it’s late and we both need our rest. We can talk more about this tomorrow, okay? Now, let’s try to get some sleep.”
Midnight worries about the environment can be tough for kiddos, but with a little empathy, reassurance, and some positive action, you can help ease their anxiety. Remember, it’s all about making them feel heard, safe, and empowered, while also gently guiding them back to bed. Sweet dreams, little eco-warriors!
